System requirements

What you need

Required

  • Windows with Source Filmmaker installed from Steam
  • An internet connection while you use the plugin
  • A Multi-SFM license key, or the free version
  • A Discord account: the plugin asks you to join the Multi-SFM Discord server once, to confirm your account

Good to know

  • No separate Python or other installs: the plugin runs on SFM's own Python
  • Voice chat uses Windows' own audio devices; a headset is recommended
  • SFM is a 32-bit program with about 4 GB of memory in all; very large sessions need care
  • Everyone in a party should use the same plugin version
Installation

Install in five steps

  1. Close Source Filmmaker

Make sure SFM is not running, so it loads the new file on its next start.

  2. Find SFM's scripts folder

In Steam: right-click Source Filmmaker → Manage → Browse local files. Then open:

    game\platform\scripts\sfm\mainmenu\
  3. Create a folder for the plugin

Inside mainmenu, create a folder named SFM Collab and put sfm_collab.py into it. The full path looks like this:

    ...\SourceFilmmaker\game\platform\scripts\sfm\mainmenu\SFM Collab\sfm_collab.py
  4. Open it from the Scripts menu

Start SFM and choose Scripts → SFM Collab → sfm_collab. The plugin window opens. (Inside SFM it is still called SFM Collab.)

  5. Activate and set up

Paste your license key and press Activate, or choose Use it for free. Follow the short Discord step and pick a nickname. Your key is remembered.

Updating: close SFM, replace the old sfm_collab.py with the new one in the same folder, and start SFM again. Your key and settings are kept.

0.14.5

Fixes from a code review

  • Report details can no longer contain formatting from party, group or server names.
  • A scene whose files were still downloading is removed if you leave the party.
  • A missing menu label in the group owner's member menu.

0.14.4

Memory

  • Much less memory in large sessions (SFM is a 32-bit program with 4 GB in all).
  • Whole scenes are streamed through files instead of memory.
  • Opening a large session no longer freezes SFM for seconds.
  • A warning when SFM's memory runs low, instead of a crash.

0.14.3

Several people in the Motion and Graph Editors

  • Nothing is written into your SFM while you drag; others' edits arrive when you let go.
  • Your own unsent change is no longer lost when someone edits the same control.
  • Everyone ends up with the same result when edits happen at the same moment.

0.14.2

Face sliders, bone scale and more

  • Face sliders and bone scale now sync correctly.
  • Models placed outside a shot are moved into the shot so everyone gets them.
  • SFM's own folder is found reliably, so installed models are not downloaded again.
  • Discord names under nicknames.

0.14.0

New server, Discord check, moderators

  • A new server with an encrypted connection.
  • Joining the Discord server is part of setting up the plugin.
  • Moderators: reports, suspensions and bans; paid time does not run during a suspension.
  • Report someone with a right click.
  • A model someone else is editing is highlighted in their colour.
